Absent any feedback on my Mars research on campus, I wrote up my project in a formal paper.  It was accepted at the annual Mars Society Convention.  The Department pays for grad students to give poster presentations at conferences, let alone formal tech papers.  Not me.  I had to withdraw the paper.  It was never published.
