Banned from registering unless I pass the oral qualifying exam; my advisor refuses to help me prepare, as is standard practice; the Disabilities Office pulls some strings and gets the Dean of Engineering involved. What does my advisor do? He quits in clear retaliation for me contacting ABET (to whom they lied to get off the hook).

Dear Bill:

I do not like having to write this letter, but your recent irresponsible actions have forced me to do so. Because of your actions, I have had to try to explain your actions to the Dean of Engineering, to meet with the Dean of the Graduate School, to talk with the Assistant Dean of Students for Judicial Affairs, to meet with Dr. Dolling, and to talk with Associate Dean of Engineering Neal Annstrong. I have had to try to explain why your words in public do not match the letters you write. I have had to try to defend you at many levels while you are indiscriminately throwing words at others that fall back on me to explain.

Dean of Engineering Ben Streetman forwarded your letter to ABET to me. l have had a 16-year association with ABET, and have represented ABET on accreditation visits at 17 universities. Your letter contains a number of untrue and inflammatory statements. The contents of your letter are very disturbing to me. 1 do not understand why you wrote them.

As a result of your actions, I have been placed in several very awkward situations and I do not want to be placed in additional situations of this type. Thus, I regret to inform you that l will no longer be able to supervise your doctoral work and cannot serve on your doctoral committee. I wish you the very best in the future.

Sincerely yours,

 Wallace T. Fowler
